“Herstory”: The Forgotten Women of History

Why are men are at the forefront when we talk about history? Who are the forgotten, yet ground-breaking women of history? How does gender affect our daily lives and how has this changed over time? From Anne Lister’s diaries to the second wave feminists’ idea of wages for housework, from early animationist Lotte Reiniger to the quite recent Magdalene Laundries, we examine changing perceptions about gender and gender roles through the last 300 years.

Histories of the Home: Cultural Developments of Family, Homestead and Belonging

Home is where the heart is. Now associated with the nuclear family, this was not always the case. In this history and cultural studies course, we explore how the home has changed over time. Students discuss international similarities and differences. We also uncover why home and belonging is so important to us and to our understanding of what it means to be human.

Film and Nostalgia: Representations of History

Why are so many films set in the past? This course, studying a number of costume dramas, considers how we construct, remember and represent the past, and how films help to forge a sense of national identity. Films, such as Goodbye Lenin! (2003) and The King’s Speech (2010), will be studied in depth. The sessions will build on students’ ability to think critically, as well as teach them about contemporary film studies and ideas of heritage, national identity and nostalgia.

A History of German Film

From the early silent films in the 1920s (where Germany was arguably the country with the best film-makers in the world), to Leni Riefenstahl’s propaganda films of Nazi Germany. From the New German Cinema film-makers who rebelled against their Nazi forefathers in the 1960s and 70s, to contemporary German cinema exploring immigration and Germany’s place in a global world. This course provides an insight into a century of German film history.
